Touché just got into the studio. He's dropping bass on 3 songs today. That means the bass will be finished for the whole album today. He's starting now with 'feel that fire' and then he's got 'stressin me' and another one which we don't have a name for yet. Listening now to what he's putting on 'fire' and it's definitely bad-ass!...but we wouldn't expect anything less of him either. He's a top-notch musician.
After he's done I'll be staying til late doing vocals for 'shook' and some bakings here and there on other songs. If we get that all done tonight I'll only have one more song to sing and we'll still be on schedule!
Quincelle "tuff-flek" Adolphin's in the studio as I write this. I'm actually using his macbook without him knowing as he sits right in front of me, back turned to me, facing Oscar and the macpro pro-tools studio monitors...playing in the bass for the song that's still untitled but currently titled 'white daisies'. He's doing an excellent job again. He played in 4 songs a couple nights ago and this is his last.
We're happy and proud to have him on this album. Him and Touche together will give this album some very special bass tracks. I sang in two songs today before Flek got here, 'the way it goes' and 'feel that fire' ...went well ..or at least Oscar and I think so! Ok I'm signing out and putting his macbook back in its bag before he finishes the song and notices. One vibe - Mike
The recording has begun for our upcoming third album...
We are all very stoked about the songs that will be on this one. All I can tell you for now is that there will be 10 or 11 songs on it. Another good reason to be so excited is because of what we heard so far from the first two songs that were completed and mixed. SOLID! TIGHT! FRESH! DOPE! SICK AND RETARDED! All of that...
We can't wait for you all to hear this one! In the meantime we'll be in the studio having a great time recording it.
Ok I forgot to mention this in our SXM blog and it was definitely worth mentioning. It was the biggest scare I had gotten in a long time. Both Bruce and I. Here's what happened: There is this hotel on the island which is nicely located above a cliff which many locals have jumped off of. There are those who have also jumped off the hotel roof which adds up to about double the height of this cliff. I am one of those, so is one of my sisters, as well as Bruce and a few other friends of mine I know of. I was shocked when I found out my brother had never even jumped off it when he was growing up. I always saw him as a dare-devil as he was one of the best on the island on a dirt-bike back in the 70's. He was actually the wheelie champion on the island for a long time. Anyway..back to Benny. So Bruce and I decided to take Benny up to the roof to let him see for himself how high this jump is. My cousin and his wife who were visiting from Trinidad also joined us. My cousin Richard said, as soon as he saw the height of it, "Nuh uh! Not in my life!! Sorry cuzz this isn't my thing."
I asked Benny if he would and he said he probably would never do it either. So I jumped...
I was scared even though it was already maybe my 20th time doing this. Every next time seems just as scary as the first time for me. Well..ok maybe not the first time! It took me about 5 or 6 walks to the top before I finally jumped it about ten years ago. I still remember how amazing it felt to conquer that fear. The adrenaline rushed through my body looking for ways to burst out for about two days!
So now I had jumped. Bruce had already made up his mind that he was not jumping on this trip. Benny was standing on the edge asking himself how I could have just jumped off the side like that. He was convinced he would not do it. Then Bruce started messing with him "ahh come on Ben you know you're walking back down today."..and me from the sea below shouting "come on Benny!! now you've got a crowd watching!" ..there were a few tourists now watching Benny stand there as frightened as he had ever been. And just like that...he jumped..
(above: video of me and a friend jumping last year..i think we may have been the first to double it up!)
I saw him falling quite stiff. Bruce and I were telling him to do whatever he had to to keep his body straight when he lands. For me flapping my arms around like crazy in a crouching position and then straightening up just before I hit the water seems to work very well. He jumped and stayed stiff the whole way down. I saw his body turning...he was going to land diagonally and his back might take a real hard hit! As he hit the water he also opened up his arms..this is not good! I was already scared to see him land like he did...but when his face bobbed up above the sea and he looked at me with complete fear in his eyes...I knew he needed help right away. I swam to him and gave some support under his back. He could hardly talk and breathing was difficult. I understood that he was panicking but I had to explain to him that we needed to get out of the water fast. He could still swim a bit but swimming to the beach would be a 15 minute swim at least. I asked him if he thought he could use his arms and upper-body strength and he said he would try. I showed him where to get up and he was up in no time..wow that went easier than I thought! I'm glad he didn't step on any sea-urchins! So we made our way up the sharp coral rocks and up to the rest. Benny was walking extremely slowly and being very still. You could notice he was feeling the pain with every breath he took in. We got him upstairs to his room and we asked him to lay down however felt best for him. So he lay on the floor on his belly. He was feeling very cold so we brought warm towels to put over his back. We talked to him to try to find out what was going on in his head. He was obviously fearing the worst...that he might have broken his spine somewhere. However, we also thought that if that were the case it would be much more difficult even to walk back to our room. So we kept telling him that it must only be a bruise and that his back muscles were all going into spasms.
I called my family and got Grace's phone number. Grace Spencer is a close friend of my family and she is a great doctor. I called her up and explained and she was not happy to hear I had gotten into trouble again..but even worse I had helped get somebody else into trouble. She said she would drive back to her clinic as she had just gotten home from work. In the meantime I bought Benny some ibuprophins. He took 600 mg as Grace suggested and during the car-ride they started to kick in just a little. This was good news because the SXM roads can get pretty bumpy as well.
We got to the clinic at 8:07 PM. Grace welcomed us with "Oh my God Michael how can you have been this stupid!!?!" ..i hung my head low..bruce said he was also to blame...benny added that he was also stupid to jump...we were all right.
Grace asked him a few questions. She then made him pee in a cup. No blood!! This was good news! Nothing damaged internally and his back and arms were just badly bruised. Grace was sure of this but Benny didn't understand how she could be so sure. She asked him to take off his shoes. She then asked him to pick them up. He did so but extremely slowly and with much pain. She then asked him to drop them again and this time to pick them up by sinking down in his knees and keeping his back straight. He did so with a lot less pain. She asked if his knees felt weak or if he felt any more serious pains now. He said no and she told him he will be fine with enough rest.
Bruce and I felt so relieved! I guess Benny felt even better. He could now stop panicking and just start taking care of his back.
Our next show was in only two days though.
Fast-forward to The Alley: Benny was trying to get his hands on some ibuprofin before the gig but we couldn't get any anywhere. It was obvious he was still feeling some real pain and the ibuprofin he had taken earlier had now worn off. ..only about an hour before show-time!
He got behind his drums that night and rocked out with us for over two hours! No drugs. The adrenaline from such a stoked crowd might have helped him forget the pain too. Just ask Danny how that goes from his experience of destroying his right ankle on SXM in 2006 and still stepping on every peddle as hard as needed during our regatta show only a few nights later.
History repeats itself. First Danny's ankle in '06 and then Benny's back in '09. Both from jumps. Maybe it's about time we just stopped jumping...
